May 2024: Update on our Loons
A pair of loons have arrived back to Lake Katherine and are undoubtedly busy setting up their nest for a hopefully successful breeding season. Your Lake Katherine Association board thought a short update on the Loon Project was in order.
The Loon Project, an organization started by Dr. Walter Piper of Chapman University, has been studying loons in Oneida, Vilas and Lincoln Counties for over 30 years. In scientific terms, having an uninterrupted stream of data spanning 30 years is both unusual and very valuable. It allows scientist to really understand what is happening with an animal population.
Unfortunately, the challenges and success of obtaining funding for field research fluctuates over the years, and this happens to be a particularly challenging time. Loons are literally “the canaries in the coal mine” for the health of Lake Katherine and all our lakes in Northern Wisconsin. With that in mind, and recognizing that this research directly benefits us as lake residents, the LKA board has made the decision to make a small donation of $250 to the Loon Project to help support another year of field research.
Several other members of the Lake Katherine Association have also made personal donations.
If you are interested in supporting the ongoing research of our feathered friends you too can make a much appreciated personal donation.
You can send a tax deductible donation via the Loon Projects website https://loonproject.org/ or, by check. Please indicate that your donation is to support Wisconsin research. (They have also begun research on Minnesota loons).
If you send a check, make the check out to “Chapman University” but write Loon Project- Wisconsin on the memo line. Also please include a note saying you are a Lake Katherine resident so Dr Piper knows.
Send a check to:
